Idoru
Gibson, William
Tokyo in the 21st century, after the great earthquake. neon rain; light seeps under any door one tries to close. The new buildings, the largest in the world, rise with slow, undulating movements, like the contractions of a gigantic sea creature. Chia McKenzie is fourteen years old, and her idol is the singer Rez, from the well-known band Lo / Rez. When word that Rez is having trouble in Tokyo reaches San Francisco, Chia is tasked with flying to the Japanese capital to find out what really happened. Rei Toei, an artificial algorithmic synthesis of average popularity ratings, is a stark, holographic image containing vast volumes of information: the idoru. And Rez has declared that he will marry her. This is the rumor that has brought Chia to Tokyo. Is there something different here, in the very nature of reality? Or is something violently new about to happen? It is possible for the idoru to be as real as she wants or needs; and as real as Rez wants. The Lo/Rez guard hires Laney, an expert intuitive sapper, and asks her to find the nodal point where Rez's and the idoru's data intersect. When Laney finds Rei Toei, though she tries to think that he is just a hologram, she suddenly sees dangers and threats that she had never imagined before.
