I desitjo i cremo

poesies incompletes

Creus, Eloi (ed.)

Sappho of Lesbos, who lived between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, is the quintessential poet of ancient Greece and therefore the first Western poet we know of. Her poetry was hugely successful in its day and crossed the borders of the island of Lesbos where she was originally from. Throughout the ancient times, it was considered by a great poet, along with Homer himself. In a society as misogynistic and sexist as the Greek one, Sappho represented the model of love and lesbian poetry (which owes its name). With the time and censorship of the church, the work of Sappho gradually faded. Sappho became a myth, for some a saint, for others a prostitute or a priestess. Throughout the twentieth century, papyri with more of his poems were found, which placed his work among the pinnacles of universal lyricism of all time. For the first time in Catalan, the entire poetic corpus of Sappho in verse is offered.
