Luciano de Samosata

Although he probably never aspired to eternal fame, Lucian (120-192? AD) is one of the most ingenious and influential satirists in Greek literature. Possessor of a strong critical spirit and a unique scathing style, he always denounced artifice, falsehood and everyday contradictions. His unique work resists easy classification and is surprisingly entertaining and much more current than that of any of his contemporaries. True Stories, one of his most representative texts, is a famous parody of fantastic adventure stories, in which Luciano displays an exuberant originality through the creation of worlds and characters with colorful names. Raised as a social satire with utopian overtones and lunar expeditions, the work also becomes a clear precedent for the science fiction genre. It is not surprising that he is considered the forerunner of such illustrious names as Erasmus, Rabelais, Voltaire, Jonathan Swift or Cervantes.
