Tito Livio is the only one of the great historians of Rome who stayed away from public life. That allowed him to spend several decades writing his great work History of Rome (Ab urbe condita). This monumental project consisted of one hundred and forty-two books, of which only thirty-five are preserved. The part that has come down to us reflects the best moments of heroic Rome with prose of undeniable charm in which the republican virtues and love of freedom are exalted. This first volume of the History of Rome presents an exhaustive general introduction to Tito Livio, written by Ángel Sierra and updated by himself for the new Classical Library, and includes the first three books of the work, which explore the mythical origins of the city, the monarchical period and the first years of the civil and military history of the Republic.
