Historia del maquis
el largo camino hacia la libertad en España
Chaves Palacios, Julián
The end of the war in 1939 was only the beginning of the anti-Franco resistance for many guerrillas. Whether for political ideals or fear of reprisals from the regime, many Spaniards took to the mountains and began a guerrilla war that soon became an organized armed movement: the maquis. Managed largely by socialist and communist groups, especially under the umbrella of the Communist Party of Spain, the maquis carried out numerous acts of defiance of the regime, from robberies to kidnappings, murders and attacks. With the Civil Guard continually hot on their heels, the maquis divided up into groups throughout the Iberian Peninsula and fought, with more or less success, in a struggle that we now know was doomed to failure.
