Titus Livy is the only one of the great historians of Rome who stayed away from public life. This allowed him to dedicate several decades to writing his great work History of Rome (Ab urbe condita). This monumental project consisted of one hundred and forty-two books, of which only thirty-five survive. The second volume of History of Rome includes books IV-VII, which cover the years 445-342 BC. C.
