Histérica

Between 2016 and 2018, Elissa Bassist saw more than twenty medical professionals for a variety of mysterious ailments. However, it was an acupuncturist who suggested that some of her physical pain could be an expression of caged rage, and that treating her voice would solve the problem. And so she did it. In Histérica, Bassist explains how women internalize and perpetuate patriarchal directives about our voice, and how this makes it difficult and sometimes prevents us from emoting or simply speaking. Imposed silence always hurts more than anything that can be said.
