Madrid burned in mid-July 1936, due to the summer heat and the military uprising in Africa that the Government estimated to quell in a few days. Lawyer Nicolás Rosal tries to leave by car, but has to return after being intercepted by an armed picket. He decides to stay in the capital while Soledad, his wife, and his two children spend the summer in Navarra. Nicolás comes from a modest family in Segovia and does not fit in with that of his wife, the Alonsos, of military lineage and Carlist ideology, who consider him "red" because of his republican sympathies. The coincidence of that day when his car cannot pass the picket control will determine his life and lead him to join Republican Madrid. Guided by new relationships and by his own need, he will try to find his place, without knowing very well what it is. When it becomes clear that the Republic is losing the war, Nicolás will have to choose between staying faithful to his new world or going with the flow.
