The state of the nation has changed. With most of the country flooded, resources controlled by the government, and ongoing wars in South America and China, England is unrecognizable. In this world of precarious and exhausting industrial work, the Authority insists that all women carry contraceptive devices. Sister tells us her story from her cell: how she dreamed of escaping to a commune of women living in Carhullan, a fortified farm in the remote Cumbrian hills, and how that escape was but the beginning of her struggle.
