Grass is the true story of a survivor: Lee Ok-Sun, a young Korean woman who during the Pacific War was exploited as a "comfort woman", the euphemism used by the Japanese imperial army to refer to their sex slaves. To this day, that remains one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century. Starting from the interviews she had with Lee Ok-Sun in a nursing home, the author has narrated the evolution of her childhood in an extremely humble environment, successively sold to several adoptive families, until the Japanese occupation arrived and in 1942 she was transferred by force to an airbase in China.
