Herculano
la ciudad del Vesubio
García Varo, Daniel
Did you know that extravagant graffiti has been found with a hidden message? Or that the walls of a domus preserve a religious enigma that revolutionized the scientific world? And that Vesuvius did not erupt on August 24?. Located closer to Vesuvius, the ashes hit Herculaneum with greater force, which was completely buried. For this reason, frescoes, mosaics, houses, baths and taverns are impeccably preserved, even better than in Pompeii, to record the luxury that surrounded the city before the eruption of the volcano. In these pages we will discover the social life of its citizens, getting to see the most personal and sentimental facets, from their belongings and tastes to their own bodies. We will observe the great structures that have been miraculously preserved due to the pyroclastic flow of the Vesuvius volcano expelled in the year 79 of our era and we will meet important figures who have contributed to the study of Roman history. They will also enlighten us about the problems that its citizens had and the lawsuits that were made thanks to the perfectly preserved wax tablets. We will read texts that were written by Pliny himself during the eruption or by the Spanish engineer Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre during the excavations. We cannot forget the maritime importance of the city, since a Roman ship is preserved in the archaeological complex itself. Nor can we ignore the Villa of the Papyri, a lush complex of Roman wealth that has been accurately recreated today. Finally, we will learn about the latest advances and discoveries in this city, which even today seems to be still active.
