Handel en Londres
la forja de un genio
Glover, Jane
In 1970, Georg Friedrich Handel traveled to London on leave from his patron, the Elector of Hannover, to spend a few months in that city. But time was passing and, to the prince's anger, Handel still did not return. And he would never do so, except for some sporadic visit to his native land, because in 1712 the composer decided to settle permanently in England, where he would coincide only two years later with his former patron, crowned King of Great Britain and Ireland with the name of George I. That supposed "brief stay" became almost half a century, as Handel would live in London until his death, which occurred on April 14, 1759. Throughout these almost five decades, Handel accumulated fame and glory, although not money, since, despite enjoying a good economic position, his business ventures focused on implanting Italian opera in the British Isles were always ruinous, as well as a permanent source of displeasure, confrontations and even diseases. In London he cultivated all the known musical genres and, even, some more, such as the oratorio, because although it is true that it already existed, it is no less true that the Halle composer raised it to the highest heights known and to be known. Practically a complete biography, because it narrates all the vicissitudes -especially the musical ones- of the great composer in the British capital. And he does it in a detailed and entertaining way, thus expanding the not too wide or accurate literature that existed on one of the most important composers in history.
