Guía para sobrevivir en el espacio
cómo no morir si solo dispones de algunas rocas a tu alrededor... y algunas nociones básicas de química
Pereyra Marí, Jordi
You are an astronaut and your ship has been stranded on an inhospitable planet in a remote solar system. You have no water or oxygen, nor does there seem to be any signs of life around you. At first glance, the only option the rocky and desolate landscape around you seems to offer you is death by starvation. After all, you can't eat, drink, or breathe rocks... can you? Rocks are made of a wide variety of substances that contain chemical elements that are crucial both to keep us alive and to build tools that facilitate our survival. In other words: a rock is not just a rock, it is a mixture of metallic compounds, salts, organic substances and a long and varied etcetera depending on the geological history of the place. In other words, a barren desert is not a simple set of inert rocks, but a gigantic laboratory shelf that is very messy but full of chemical substances that we can use for our benefit. In Guide to survive in space we will not only discover how to use chemistry and geology to take advantage of the substances that this chaotic laboratory called nature offers us, but we will also visit a wide assortment of planets and celestial bodies in order to find out their origin and explore the options that we would have if, in the future, we were to send interstellar missions and establish human colonies in them.
