A week of sailing between Malaysia and the Chinese port of Shantou in late 1949. The ship is obsolete, the crew abundant: sixteen men. They take turns on duty every night and it's time for long conversations. What are the sailors talking about? They are not worried about the civil war that is unfolding wherever they go: they are obsessed with syphilis. Everyone has it. And, in conscience, unforgivable betrayals.
