Gentrificación
capitalismo cool, turismo y control del espacio urbano
Sequera Fernández, Jorge
That gentrification constitutes the only viable solution for abandoned neighborhoods is an argument that from some sectors involved is repeated as a mantra, thus legitimizing one of the main contemporary mechanisms of neoliberal urban management, masked under ambiguous concepts such as regeneration, revitalization or rebirth. The new middle classes, attracted by phenomena such as the social mix, the alternative scene or the imaginary of popular culture, choose these previously devalued neighborhoods, quickly turning urban deterioration into a chic product. In recent years, touristification, fueled by the growth of platform capitalism that converts homes into hotels, is one of the greatest current challenges in rethinking the city. Complementing or antithetical to gentrification, this "predatory tourism" turns the city into a great museum, where the traditional commercial landscape of some urban areas tends to become Disney-franchised and franchised, causing profound socio-cultural changes, urban inequality and new precariousness.
