Gacelas de arena

poesías árabes de la Edad de Oro

Castells, Margarita (ed.)

Emerged between the deserts of Arabia and the valleys of ancient Mesopotamia, Arab poetry has dazzled since the conquests of Islam forged a vast empire, from Central Asia to al-Andalus, and extended the use of the Arabic language in its territories. The Arabic tradition has transmitted an impressive written record of the classical legacy, but until recently a part of it has not been observed, with new stimuli: poetry composed by women, which perhaps surprises with the amount of material preserved. Gacelas de arena presents an anthology of 30 poets who lived, between the 5th and 13th centuries, in various regions of the then Arab world and includes the translation of 99 poems. The exhibition is significant of what the female production was within that framework, and invites us to contemplate the landscape through other looks, to qualify the colors with which until now it has been painted.
