The publication of "Out of the Game", the best-known book by the Cuban poet Heberto Padilla, provoked a controversy of incalculable dimensions in Cuban and Latin American cultural politics of the 1960s and 1970s. In this work, Padilla built an allegory of repression and censorship in the Cuban dictatorship and was therefore retaliated by the Government. He suffered arrest and was forced under torture to proclaim orally and before a large audience of writers his repentance for having betrayed the revolution and its leader with his poems. This caused the majority of European and American intellectuals and politicians who had applauded the regime to withdraw their support from it. The book will become part of the history of universal literature, not only because it includes some of the most beautiful and hurtful poems written in Cuba in the last century, but also because it is a symbol of the fight against dictatorships and in favor of the Liberty.
