Franziska Scheler
Brentano, Bernard von
Berlin, 1929. Karl Chindler has moved away, and Leopold decides to go see his brother to take a look at the new flat and bring some flowers to his sister-in-law. There he meets Franziska Scheler, a love of youth, and accompanies her to her house at the end of her evening. She is now divorced, and lives with her son. She invites him to tea one afternoon, but afterwards behaves like someone who has ventured too far at first and then backs away slowly to retreat to safe positions. He only has one wish: to see her every day. But they have to be careful, because Franziska fears that if she leads a bad life, her ex-husband could take the child from her. Bernard von Brentano (1901-1964), a German writer and journalist, was a Berlin correspondent for the "Frankfurter Zeitung" in the 1920s. His articles and essays ended up being burned in 1933 when the National Socialists came to power. That same year he went into exile in Switzerland where he wrote "Franziska Scheler", a great society and love novel that portrays the end of an era.
