In 2008 Foster Dade arrives at Kennedy, an elite boarding school in New Jersey. Barack Obama begins his term as president; teenagers share secrets and rumors via iChat and BlackBerry Messenger; and the Internet, as we know it, is beginning to flourish. Just like Foster, a restless student who is trying to weather adolescence after his parents' scandalous divorce. But soon Foster begins to spend time with Annabeth Whittaker and Jack Albright, the two centers of Kennedy's social scene, who take him in to help him navigate the gangs and hierarchies of the most privileged and carefree. Eighteen months later, a tragic scandal will lead to Foster's expulsion and change Kennedy and his students forever. When our unnamed narrator is assigned to Foster's old dorm, he begins an epic investigation into what really happened. Through interviews with former classmates, Foster's blog posts, playlists, text documents, and the narrator's own obsessive imagination, a story eventually develops: Foster's, yes, but also one that asks who owns them. our personal stories and how we become the heroes or villains of them.
