Alarcos Llorach, Emilio

A convinced defender and promoter of structuralist theories, particularly functionalism, Emilio Alarcos Llorach set out to apply such postulates to the study of the Spanish language. The first work resulting from this methodological conception was Spanish Phonology, a pioneering book that became one of the first European phonological treatises to put into practice the proposals of the Prague Linguistic Circle. Since its appearance, this solid phonological manual has become a reference book of transcendental importance both in the field of the Spanish language and in the international plane of linguistics. Spanish phonology divides its field of study into two large sections: the first, general, where the principles of this discipline are presented, subdivided into two sections, synchronic and diachronic phonology; and a second, in which a rigorous phonological description of current Spanish is established, complemented by a broad diachronic perspective that goes from Vulgar Latin to the present day.
