Flush

Flush

Woolf, Virginia

Flush is a long-eared, wide-tailed cocker spaniel with "stunned hazel eyes." A few months after his birth he is gifted to the famous poet Elizabeth Barrett. Flush will become his inseparable companion and, later, the accomplice of his love affairs with the poet Robert Browning, although he must first overcome the animosity and jealousy he feels before his lucky rival ... Virginia Woolf related the story of Elizabeth Barrett's dog with biographical rigor, recreating an era as impressive as the Victorian and obtaining one of the most delicious works of contemporary literature. As Quentin Bell points out, Flush is not the specific product of a dog lover, but a narrative constructed from the effort to see the world through the mind of a dog, a world dominated by smells, fidelities and canine wishes.
