Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro

el último "rey católico"

Zanatta, Loris

We know the history and the legends surrounding it: since the middle of the 20th century, Fidel Castro has been a fundamental figure in Latin America. His long speeches became famous, they became the gospel of the struggle; the Cuban revolution was a beacon for the left of the region. In the middle of the Cold War, with the confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, a communist regime a few hundred kilometers from Miami became an affront that was difficult to tolerate. A true Marxist icon. But perhaps this is all a very accepted and comfortable misunderstanding. A strict review of the ideological corpus of Fidel Castro, his training, his life, his moral universe and his writings, so loaded with ascetic religiosity, reveals something else: the basis of his thought is unrepentant Catholicism, the result of Hispanic heritage of his family and the education of the Jesuits. And on that Marxism rests, staunch until his death. This explains better what he fights and despises: liberal modernity, representative democracy, individual freedoms, the market economy. And, above all, the United States, the quintessence of these Protestant-rooted values ??that spread throughout the West.
