In October 2017, scientists at the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii detected an interstellar object moving close to Earth. It was first classified as a comet, but this hypothesis was discarded. Called Oumuamua, "messenger" or "explorer" in Hawaiian, it was finally classified as an asteroid, although its shape and behavior differed from the rest of the asteroids and comets in our solar system. The more scientists looked at it, the stranger it seemed.
