Eutanasia, lo que el decorado esconde

reflexiones y experiencias de profesionales de la salud

Devos, Timothy (ed.)

This book is based on facts and data. Its authors -doctors, nurses, psychiatrists and philosophers- start from their experiences in caring for patients facing the end of life, in a country where euthanasia is decriminalized. A subject that involves so much suffering demands the utmost respect towards those who go through this trance. The terrible cases that are made public from time to time lead many people to conclude that the only good end of life is that offered by euthanasia. However, in countries where euthanasia has been decriminalized, the practice of the law has led to a slippery slope that ends up overflowing the initial assumptions and that affects groups for which it was never intended, such as psychiatric patients, minors age and those who show "vital fatigue". This normalization even leads some doctors and nurses to offer euthanasia as a "remedy" for suffering to patients who have not requested it. Given this legal practice, can euthanasia be the only solution that our society offers its citizens? Should palliative care be dismissed or lowered because it is more complex and expensive? Does the maximum humanity limit itself to feel compassion for those who suffer without even helping them to rethink their decision? Or is the real help, rather, in "taking care of it", promoting in society -especially in the health and family environment- a "palliative culture" that deals with suffering, deterioration, loneliness and helplessness of the next human?
