Esplendor y ocaso de Roma
apogeo, crisis y decadencia del Imperio
Buenacasa Pérez, Carles
The High Empire of Rome (27 BC-235 AD) is one of the most momentous periods in ancient history: the long and continuous period of peace brought about by the emperors allowed great economic prosperity that had repercussions, for example, in the beautification of the cities of the empire, Rome being the most characteristic case. However, behind the image of stability transmitted by the high imperial period, there are shadows and tensions that would end up leading to the model of military monarchy at the end of the Severus era -as of the year 235-, which gave way to a period of political crisis that almost ended the empire. Against this splendor that historians attribute to the High Roman Empire, the political context of the Lower Empire is described in terms of "decline" and "fall". Between the 3rd and 5th centuries, the Roman Empire entered a phase of military stagnation, and became more defensive due to frequent incursions by the Germanic peoples. All this, added to the process of Christianization of the empire, has led to conceive these centuries as a period of rupture with the classical past of Rome and its dominions.
