España/Nueva España
el arte de la pintura en cuatro tiempos
Cuadriello, Jaime
This book has two objectives. On the one hand, to link the trajectory of New Spain painting with the Prado Museum collections through a dialogue between topics, transfers and simultaneities; on the other, to understand the inflections of the local pictorial tradition through the analysis of the artistic production of four nodal figures, specifically three peninsular artists who emigrated to the capital of the viceroyalty and one of Creole origin -the Basque Baltasar de Echave Orio, the Sevillian Sebastián López de Arteaga, the Mexican Juan Rodríguez Juárez and the Valencian Rafael Ximeno y Planes-. Each one of them not only successively represents a new approach in the theory and practice of colonial painting, but also the possibility of reconfiguring a "cultural otherness", the result of the incorporation of the taste and expectations of the place.
