España mi natura
vida, honor y gloria en los Tercios
Carboneras, Juan Víctor
The soldiers belonging to the Tercios defended the interests of the Hispanic Monarchy wherever they were sent. These units represented the greatest expression of the military organization of the Spanish crown. Spain my nature, Italy my good fortune, Flanders my grave, a short and anonymous stanza of three lines, became very popular among her soldiers from the second half of the 16th century. The remote and uprising region of northern Europe became their tomb in many cases, but they continued there, for their king and because their honor requested it. Much ink has been spilled on his numerous victories and feats. This book goes one step further. The reader will find an analysis of the daily reality of these men, from their birth to their death, whether or not they were on the battlefield. You will have the answer to questions as varied as, what was your diet made of? How was your relationship with the natives of the country? What were the motivations that led you to combat? Ultimately, he will accompany them on their adventure: first, from Spain to Italy, in which lasting ties will be strengthened and, finally, along the mythical Spanish Way, to Flanders, where he will fight alongside them, side by side.
