Entre l'infern i la glòria
Valls, Àlvar
Between Hell and Glory is a novel that narrates the life and work of one of the first Catalan writers of all time, Jacint Verdaguer, in the second half of the 19th century. The author portrays a life that for his protagonist was a hell and at the same time a double process of ascension to glory: the earthly glory of the poet and the heavenly glory to which the priest aspired. It is the story of a genius of tortured temperament, always dissatisfied, resolute, able to move from absolute submission to the Church to rebellion against his bishop when he falls into disgrace and his natural environment -regionalist Catalanism- it turns against him. The novel focuses on the last days of the protagonist's life, in 1902, terminally ill with tuberculosis, a short period in which the heated struggle between two groups of friends -those of the League and the Republicans- is reproduced. to influence the poet's decisions. In the enclosed redoubt of the Villa Joana de Vallvidrera and in the midst of great tensions, the figures of the family that cares for him, the visits he receives, the doctors who treat him, two intriguing cousins ??who act behind the bubbles, and also the character of Pep, the medical soldier who assists him, the only clean heart in that suffocating microcosm. Accompanying the story, there are episodes of the poet's life framed in the Barcelona of the time in full industrial and urban expansion, the rise of regionalism, the second carlinada, the Memorial de Greuges, the interiors of the Floral Games, the Exhibition Universal of 1888, the bomb of the Corpus Christi procession, the aftermath of the wars in Africa and Cuba, its relationship with the royal family... The action focuses on natural places or cities and towns in Catalonia and of the world, following the poet's travels through America, Europe and Africa and also on board several ships, one of which was chaplain for two years.
