Enfermedades raras
ciencia y realidad de la rareza en medicina
Palau, Francesc
Rare diseases are rare disorders or conditions that affect the health of a small part of the population, although as a whole, they are a public health problem. In the European Union, those with a prevalence of less than 5 affected per 10,000 inhabitants are recognized as such. It has been estimated that 6% of Europeans may suffer from one of them. This book addresses the recent history of rare diseases and their process of recognition and social settlement, medical and health aspects, scientific research and the relevance of genetics and the study of the genome in their diagnosis and treatment. Among the challenges posed are the issue of undiagnosed patients and the development of new therapies.
