Energia sobirana
com Catalunya pot ser autosuficient en energia renovable
Tremosa i Balcells, Ramon
Morron, Jaume
Russia's war against Ukraine and economic sanctions have driven energy prices to prohibitive levels, which will remain high in the future. The high energy dependence of our country will take its toll. But war and the climate crisis are also an opportunity to accelerate the energy transition. If we don't do it, in 2050 Catalan energy will not be able to be completely renewable. We cannot be a fossil island in the middle of an ocean of countries opting for decarbonisation and clean energy. Catalonia is a country of mountains, very populated, with the wind concentrated in a few places, with landscapes of high scenic value and little available land. But if we do not produce affordable energy for homes and businesses, it will have to come to us from neighboring countries with very high voltage lines. Photovoltaic and wind energy, land and sea, need to be deployed, which are the basis of the energy transition, but both are not enough to complete it. Ramon Tremosa and Jaume Morron are making a bet in favor of taking advantage of the remarkable network of existing swamps, especially in the High Pyrenees, where reversible pumping stations could be generalized, which have the potential to generate energy of up to 14 GW, at a low production cost. Reversible power plants, booming all over the world today, produce energy at times of greatest demand, moderate the price, help plan production, act as a battery for wind and photovoltaics and can contribute, in a way decisive, to Catalonia's energy sovereignty.
