Hemingway published In Our Time, his first storybook, in 1925. He was twenty-six years old and already writing as a veteran. This first edition in Spanish, an incomprehensible debt that had to be paid, respects the original order of a storybook that due to its organicity and internal consistency can also be read as a fragmented novel. War and alcohol, fishing and bulls, Nick Adams' tormented loneliness are already here, orbiting around that emotional core that Hemingway never names but to which his stories always gravitate. Ricardo Piglia was eighteen when he found a used copy of In Our Time in a bookstore in Mar del Plata. He read it all that afternoon. His prologue to this edition (which he wrote shortly before his death) invites Hemingway's loyal readers to engage in illuminating dialogue and is, at the same time, an unbeatable presentation for those fortunate enough to cross this door for the first time.
