A son writes a letter to his mother, who cannot read. The letter is, in fact, an examination of conscience, a review of the elements that have been forming his identity: as the son of a Vietnamese family who fled their country to the United States and as a young man who discovers and assumes his homosexuality. The boy's family consists of his grandmother -now elderly and dying- who had to leave Vietnam with his daughters after going through very hard experiences to survive after the war. There is also an abusive and absent father. And there is the mother, a disoriented woman who works in a manicure salon and maintains a complex relationship with her son. And finally, the young protagonist, who grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, suffered school harassment for his double marginality -immigrant and homosexual- and discovered as a teenager the love and sexuality with Trevor...
