Since being abandoned as a child in one of Austermeer's wizarding libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among grimoires that rustle on the shelves and that, at the slightest provocation, transform into monsters of ink and leather. There she hopes to finish her apprenticeship to take charge of guarding them and protect others from her power. When someone sabotages the security of the library to release the most dangerous grimoire it houses, Elisabeth finds herself implicated in the crime and with no one to turn to except her sworn enemy: the sorcerer Nathaniel Espinosa, always accompanied by his mysterious servant. Seeing possibilities that she could never have imagined begin to unfold before her, Elisabeth begins to question everything she has been taught about her beloved libraries, wizardry, and even herself.
