El volcán

Mann, Klaus

With strong autobiographical traits, Klaus Mann presents us in The Volcano the harrowing image of a group of exiles from the Nazi regime. Structured based on the experiences of a homosexual couple, one of whom usually identifies with the author himself, the protagonists also become spokespersons for the cultural and ideological movements of their time: surrealism, liberal humanism and Catholic, aestheticism, idealistic and militant anti-fascism... And, with all this, perhaps this is the great European novel about exile, about the void into which exile throws its victims; a space in which the passage of time is replaced by the dissolution of one's own identity, which remains suspended.
