El sitio de Leningrado
la lucha por la vida
Hernández Garvi, José Luis
(ed.)
872 days of blockade: from September 8, 1941, when the Wehrmacht cut off the last entrance road to Leningrad, until January 27, 1944, when the Red Army managed to lift the siege. The siege of Leningrad is one of the most tragic pages in the history of mankind. The birthplace of the October Revolution and the embodiment of Russian culture, Leningrad was a symbol that the Nazis wanted to destroy: "The Führer has decided to wipe Petersburg off the face of the earth. After the defeat of Soviet Russia there would be no interest some for the existence of that great town", said the orders of the OKW to the attacking forces. About three million people inhabited the old St. Petersburg. The railway lines, the highways and the maritime crossings were cut off and the isolation was total. The Russian winter, the lack of food and the constant shelling became the daily life of the inhabitants of the city. Among the flames, the hope of survival of tens of thousands of people was consumed. But, during the most critical moments, when the German army surrounded the city and the fate of Leningrad hung in the balance, the city did not surrender. In one of the most incredible strength exercises in history, Leningrad became a symbol of resistance. This book collects, through articles signed by historians and journalists specialized in the matter, different aspects of this fundamental episode of World War II. From the profiles of the most outstanding commanders of both sides to the narration of the premiere of Symphony No. 7 by Dmitry Shostakovich, through the intervention of the Spanish soldiers of the Blue Division, the battle of Krasny-Bor or the dark episodes of cannibalism that occurred in the streets of the city.
