A serial killer is burning his victims alive. There are no clues at the crime scenes and the police have given up all hope. When his name is found on the charred remains of the third victim, Washington Poe, a furloughed and disgraced detective is called in to take over the investigation, a case he wants no part of. He reluctantly accepts Tilly Bradshaw, a brilliant but unsocial civic analyst, as his new partner. Soon, the couple uncovers a clue that only he could see. The dangerous assassin has a plan, and for some reason, Poe is part of it. As the number of victims continues to mount, Poe discovers that he knows much more about the case than he ever imagined. And in a terrifying ending that will shatter everything he believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are far worse things than being burned alive.
