After the magnificent victory of Don Álvaro de Bazán on Terceira Island, King Felipe II thanked him for his services, naming him Great of Spain and granting him the new rank of Captain General of the Ocean Sea. The Castilian Cortes received him with fervent acclamation and a tedeum was chanted in his honor at El Escorial. Now his goal was to attack England on his own territory. Filling with enthusiasm the Spanish king who was thirsty for that victory. The shipyards began working tirelessly in Seville, Cádiz and Lisbon, where they stocked up on men and supplies. Galleons, urcas, rattles, galleys, galeazas, ships, and many more ships filled the Tagus estuary, accompanied by religious advocations, since it was a religious crusade blessed by the Pope.
