Hertz Mínsker, Jewish émigré, self-proclaimed intellectual and genuine charlatan, lives at the expense of childhood friend Morris Kálisher, a real estate tycoon. An inveterate seducer, he is married for the fourth time to the enchanting Bronie and has an affair with Minne, Morris's wife, in the same beards as their respective spouses.
