El renegado
XXXVII Premio Jaén de Novela
Castedo, Julio
Eight years before the arrival of Hernán Cortés in present-day Mexico, a Spanish ship sank off Jamaica and the currents carried the shipwrecked to the coasts of Yucatán. There they were captured by the Mayans and only two men managed to survive: Jerónimo de Aguilar, a young cleric, was made a slave; Gonzalo Guerrero, a military veteran, found himself after confronting a jaguar in a dense and remote jungle, to later form a family with an indigenous woman and become a prominent Mayan leader, a precursor of miscegenation. This is the incredible story of him.
