Néstor Azcona, a young local police apprentice in a coastal town of Tarragona by family connection and without any vocation, discovers during his night patrols a brutal murder in the old Roman villa of Els Munts. The victim has been decapitated and the head buried in the viscera of an animal. The strange ritual is even more disconcerting when only a few days later a headless body appears crucified in the Tarragona Circus. The two scenographies, meticulously cared for, lead to the identification of the same corpse: it is a dangerous ex-convict, apparently reinserted sex offender. While the elite investigators of the Mossos d'Esquadra suspect an open war between mafias, Néstor begins to see signs of the possible involvement in the events of some members of the IX Legio Hispana, a "professional" historical reconstruction group that revives in the 21st century the golden age of the army of imperial Rome...
