End of the s. XIX. A young couple rents an old mansion to spend the summer. From her room upstairs, the narrator is convinced that the house is haunted. John, a doctor and man of science, does not share the fanciful ideas of his wife, who believes that he simply needs a rest cure to relieve his temporary nervous breakdown. With nothing to stimulate her, she becomes obsessed with the pattern and color of the wallpaper.
