El país de l'altra riba
III Premi Proa de Novel·la
Salord Ripoll, Maite
A German plane that has just bombed the north coast of Africa crashes on Illa de l'Aire, in the southeast of Menorca. At the same time, in the city of Algiers, Alfred Gold and his grandson Daniel, Jews who have crossed France fleeing the Nazis, open a tailor's shop. The visit of an elegant French settler, Michel Bisset, who runs the most luxurious restaurant in the Algerian capital, the Café de Paris, opens up hope for them. In the restaurant, the young Daniel Gold meets Omar, an ex-combatant of the French troops, and Isabel, a girl from Fort de l'Eau, a town in the Bay of Algiers founded and inhabited by Menorcans. Fifty years later, in the streets of Barcelona, Marta and Hanna begin a love affair in which the secrets and family memories of both weigh. The intersection of the two stories forms a tapestry that shows, between violent collective episodes, lives that cling to love and solidarity.
