Zweig, Stefan

These memoirs, The World of Yesterday, are written in Brazil, in the town of Petrópolis, where Zweig listened every day to the latest news of the World War II disaster on his small radio, imagining the most horrible scenarios. For this reason, the reader will verify that in this sense it is an intentionally anachronistic book, some memoirs where we fundamentally note that the physiognomy of the old humanity will never be the same and, for Zweig -who ended his life voluntarily so as not to continue being a spectator of this catastrophe- for the worse. A masterful work, with the author's original prologue and sixteen chapters, which reveals to us the tragedy of a cultural heritage that is nonetheless ours and that of an extraordinary figure, that of the author and his feeling of uprooting that hovers over these pages. Despite feeling gratitude towards the countries and friends that welcomed him, this nomadic Zweig ended up giving up.
