Robin Lane Fox teaches ancient history at Oxford and is also a great storyteller. From this fortunate combination, a different classical world history book has emerged, which has the rigor of good academic work -and has therefore deserved the praise of a specialist like Peter Jones- and the amenity of a tale of which critics have told which is "incredibly entertaining" and "more epic than the best Roman movie." Because, if something characterizes this fascinating journey through the world of classical antiquity from Homer to Hadrian, it is precisely the constant presence of the human touch: its ability to evoke figures such as Socrates, Alexander, Cicero or Caesar and to speak to us, at the same time, of the daily life of the citizens, the last days of Pompeii or the circus games, in some pages that give us back the charm of the best historical narrative.
