The mother prepares to feed her child while distracting him with a toy. He gets a few spoonfuls to eat, and suddenly the boy sets in motion his strategic plan against overeating: the first line of defense is to close his mouth and turn his head. Still, the worried mother insists with the spoon. This situation, more typical of a battlefield than of a daily activity, humorously illustrates the central thesis of this book: lack of appetite is a problem of balance between what a child eats and what his mother expects him to eat. It should never be forced.
