Best, George

In addition to being one of the most talented and charismatic players in British football of all time -his sporting feats remain in the memory of many Englishmen, such as the first European Cup won by Manchester United in 1968-, George Best was an enfant terrible thing that shocked the world of football and British society in the 1960s and 1970s. Attractive, indomitable, talkative and womanizing, Best raised passions both in the stands of Old Trafford and in the streets and in the press. Nicknamed "the fifth Beatle" for his dissipated lifestyle and long hair, Best had a dazzling and erratic career that took him from fame to disgrace in a very short time. A stubborn alcoholic at a young age, he threw himself into nightlife, gambling and women like a rock star, shattering what could have been a prolific career and leaving him ostracized and on death's door. In a confessional style, raw and sometimes brutal, but also passionate and tender, Best recounts his harsh experience with alcohol, police arrests and crazy nights of wine and roses, traffic accidents and countless lovers, and of course, his most legendary football feats. George Best died in 2005 of a lung infection and was buried in Belfast, his hometown, in an unprecedented state funeral that drew more than half a million people.
