The Infanta María de Avís, the richest woman in Portugal, is dying in Lisbon. While her last hour arrives, she recalls her life, a succession of palace and political intrigues that one after another frustrated her marriage commitments and, above all, her great love story. Far from there, in the powerful monastery of Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa, various crimes take place. Fray Atilio's investigations will relate them to the death of a young herbalist and the birth of a girl with a mark in the shape of a butterfly. That creature will grow up with the family of a Jewish doctor persecuted by the Inquisition, and later she will become the brilliant assistant of Nuno, the apothecary, until an Avis crosses her path.
