Cohen, Leonard

Lawrence Breavman, the protagonist of this first novel that Leonard Cohen wrote in 1963, has many points in common with the author himself: both seek love and beauty, and both go through moments of absolute happiness and deep anguish, because they always grow up a little at the wrong time, accumulating experiences like someone who collects coins without knowing their value very well. The only child of a Jewish family in Montreal, Lawrence discovers the hidden corners of his city in the company of Krantz, his childhood best friend. He then heads towards adolescence and to meet his first love, Lisa, showing wounds that are medals to a child, secrets to a lover, and generally reveal the world to us raw.
