El individuo flotante
la muchedumbre solitaria en los tiempos de las redes sociales
Pérez Álvarez, Marino
Our world has completely changed. Our ancestors would be amazed to see us with a gadget in our hands, looking at a screen and typing non-stop. Since the world is dominated by the mobile phone and the use of social networks has become widespread among young people, nothing is the same anymore. We are in a new world. Our coexistence with the mobile phone reveals certain paradoxes. The mobile phone, which is a talking device, is eradicating conversation. Social networks, which were supposed to connect each other, actually put each other together in solitude. In fact, since 2012 a growing deterioration in the mental health of children, adolescents and young people has been observed, as well as an increase in behavioral addictions associated with social networks. The renowned psychologist Marino Pérez offers a historical perspective on the origins of the "century of loneliness" that social networks have radicalized. The "lonely crowd," made up of "floating individuals," is afflicted with a series of psychological malaises that have their roots in modern individualism. The floating individual offers a rigorous analysis of the psychological impact of social networks on users with the aim that both parents and educators know how to protect our minors and reverse the damage caused by their addiction to mobile phones.
