El idealista
Nguyen, Viet Thanh
Paris, early eighties. After escaping from Vietnam and his time as an immigrant in the United States, the nameless protagonist of this story arrives in the French capital to try to carve out a future using capitalism in one of its purest forms: drug trafficking. Although his life is no longer in physical danger, he continues to be tortured by his past as a double agent and struggling to assimilate into the dominant Western European culture. As he joins a group of leftist intellectuals and politicians, he finds not only encouragement to turn the page, but also clients for his business. What he doesn't count on is the presence of other unforeseen dangers, from government oppression to drug addiction to a seemingly intractable problem: how can he bring together his two closest friends, Bon and Man, two men whose worldviews and ideals are completely opposite.
